A quick catch-up with the top French player in the 2017 Lacoste Ladies Open de France.
What memories do you have of your 6th place finish last year, obtained thanks to an exceptional 63 (-7) at Golf de Chantaco on Sunday?
It was an amazing day… I do not really know what happened: I started to chain birdies, and I felt like I was in another world! I felt that nothing could happen to me, that everything was in my favour. I did not think about the result at all. This sixth place, earned in front of the French public, my parents and my friends, is a very beautiful memory. This result was important for my season, because it allowed me to secure my card and to progress into the top 50 on the order of merit, which was my goal. It gave me full confidence for the future.
In 2018, the Lacoste Ladies Open de France is played at Golf du Médoc and offers an increased purse. What do you think of the developments?
It’s nice to change golf course, because even though Chantaco is a very good course, there are plenty of others in France that are worth a visit. I do not know Le Chateaux, but I have heard only glowing reviews about it, so I cannot wait to find out! The evolution experienced by the tournament this year shows that in France, we are really behind the women’s game. It will give us French players even more desire to progress to as high a level as possible.
For a Frenchwoman, playing her national open is particularly special. How would you describe it?
It’s great because we feel that people have come to see us. I remember one memory, from the second day I think, when leaving the recording area I was suddenly surrounded by lots of children who said “It’s Agathe Sauzon, it’s Agathe Sauzon!” It was only my second year as a pro and I do not think I’m that famous yet… (laughs) so it was very nice.
