President Ivan Gašparovič practises his putting

The President of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Gašparovič, was on site at Gray Bear Golf Club at Tále ski, golf and hotel resort on Wednesday for the Pro Am at the Allianz Slovak Ladies Open.

Unfortunately, the President was unable to play golf as he recently had a hip replacement operation, but he watched Laura Davies from a buggy along with Mr Vladimir Soták, President of the Tále ski, golf and hotel resort. He was also able to walk around with a stick, which conveniently doubled up as a driver and putter (see pictures).

Mrs Silvia Gašparovičová, the First Lady of the Slovak Republic, gave a speech at the welcome party for the gathered players, caddies and officials on Tuesday evening. Guests were treated to a mixture of new and traditional Slovakian hospitality, with a splendid buffet, dancing, opera singing and a disco as part of the entertainment. Mrs Gašparovičová is the President of the Association of Junior Golf and responsible for bringing golf into schools in Slovakia.
