Laura Davies and Melissa Reid will play together for the first time when they tee up for England at this week’s European Nations Cup, at La Sella Golf Resort in Alicante, Spain.

The English pair will take on 17 other teams in the tournament, which has been played annually at the Olazabal designed course since 2008.

Sweden is the favourite, as Anna Nordqvist and Sophie Gustafson have returned to defend the title, followed by the United States team of Brittany Lincicome and Christina Kim, then England.

The English duo of Trish Johnson and Rebecca Hudson won the inaugural 2008 event, followed by Christel Boeljon and Marjet van der Graaff from the Netherlands in 2009.

“I feel like we’ve got a good chance if we both play like we’ve been playing recently,” said 79-time tournament winner Davies, who won five events on the Ladies European Tour last season.

“It’s going to be great fun. You can take a few corners on and the par-fives are reachable. There are three or four outstanding teams and we’re one of them.”

Davies played in the event alongside Lisa Hall in 2009, while Reid partnered Karen Stupples last year.

Reid, who earned her first professional title at the 2010 Turkish Airlines Ladies Open, said: “Laura Davies is a legend and she’s one of the reasons I got into golf. When I was growing up she was the only lady golfer out there. We’re going to have a good, aggressive team.”
