Who was St Patrick? Where was he from?
St Patrick’s Day – March 17 – is the day when the whole world celebrates all that is Irish. But who exactly was the most famous Paddy of them all, St Patrick, and why do we celebrate him? Truth and legend have merged down the years but there are several commonly held beliefs about Ireland’s Patron Saint including:
St Patrick wasn’t Irish at all! He was born in Wales and was transported to Ireland as a slave in the fifth century. He is recognised as having converted Ireland from Paganism to Christianity and is said to have used the shamrock as the symbol that explained the existence of God is three distinct elements within one body. There are no snakes in Ireland and probably never have been, but St Patrick has also been credited with driving the snakes into the sea and more aptly from a golfer’s perspective, out of the rough!
From humble beginnings St Patrick’s Day has grown into a worldwide phenomenon with marching bands and parades celebrating all that it means to be Irish in the four corners of the world. Some of the world’s most iconic buildings will turn green this year including, Sydney Opera House, London Eye, Table Mountain and Empire State Building.
