Australia’s Karen Lunn is full of confidence as she heads to the Evian Masters presented by Société Générale from 22 – 25 July.
The 1993 Women’s British Open champion has enjoyed a strong six weeks on the Ladies European Tour, including a sensational last fortnight. She claimed her ninth LET win at the Portugal Ladies Open at Campo Real and tied for ninth at the following week’s Tenerife Ladies Open. With five top 20 finishes from ten events, she is now placed 12th on the LET’s Henderson Money List.
She commented: “I’m playing well. The last six weeks, I’ve played six events in a row so there are a lot of positives. I’m playing well and my short game is pretty good so I’ll just keep working on the same things.”
She said that she was excited to be playing at the Evian Masters again, which features a prize fund of US$3.25 million.
“I’m really excited. It’s the event every single player on this Tour wants to play in. It’s such a great event. It’s not a Major worldwide but it’s a Major on our Tour, there’s huge prize money and we don’t get to play in events like that every day. You’re playing against the best players in the world and I’ve been playing pretty well all year so it will be nice to get to play against the best players and get an idea of where you’re game is at.
“It’s a really good golf course and a good test of golf. You’ve got to drive it well. I think it really suits my game pretty well but obviously you have to putt well. The greens are the trickiest part. It’s reacquainting yourself with the greens and getting a feel for them again. They are very, very tough greens.
“We’ve got another long stretch with Evian, the British, Ireland, Wales and I haven’t decided what I’m going to play after that. They are four big events but even though at the end of the British it’s two of the biggest events, Ireland and Wales are still really big and important events for us. Obviously I want to play well there so I just want to take a rest and be ready for a run of tournaments again.”
She added that she might play a practise round with her partner at the Comunitat Valenciana European Nations Cup, Karrie Webb, who inspired her to victory in Portugal. “It will be good to catch up again and with all the other Aussie girls that play in the States and that I don’t see every day.”
Lunn is joining a star studded line-up at Evian which includes the likes of Webb, Cristie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen, Anna Nordqvist and Yani Tseng along with the defending champion Ai Miyazato of Japan.
A total of 111 players will tee-off for four days of stroke play at the Evian Masters Golf Club. Along with ten sponsors invites and a number of special entries including tournament champions, top money winners and previous champions, the field will be filled by players from the Rolex Women’s World Rankings published on July 12, 2010.
