Davies, who won the ANZ Ladies Masters three times: in 1993, 1994 and 2003, felt that her length off the tee would give her an advantage this week. She said that as a bet, you could look no further than Webb, but suggested the Swedish player Karin Sjodin as an outside chance, because of her long driving distance.
“You’ve got to be a long hitter this week,” she said. “The shorter hitters are going to struggle because the course just can’t dry out in four days, I don’t think.”
South Korea’s Amy Yang, who won the event in 2006 as a 16-year-old amateur, thought that the ball would travel around 20 yards shorter than if the fairways were dry.
“The fairways are so wet that the ball isn’t running much – only carry,” said the 18-year-old Yang, who has lived locally on the Gold Coast for the last three years, and who finished in fourth place at last week’s MFS Women’s Australian Open.
Davies, who won the New South Wales Open at Oatlands Golf Club in Sydney a fortnight ago, before finishing in a tie for 51st at last week’s event, also rated her compatriot Melissa Reid.
The 20-year-old finished third at the MFS Women’s Australian Open and fifth in Sydney the previous week.
