Gulbis in the Challenge Match

“It’s been a good year. If I had been healthy the whole time and not had a win I would have been disappointed,” she said. “But when you are out for two months missing big tournaments and when it takes two to three months to come back, I mean I have missed five months of the season; you cannot be competitive. So that is the reason I cannot be so hard on myself.”
Sorenstam said that she had found a balance in her life this year, with her many projects including course design, her Academy, Foundation and website. She also became engaged to Mike McGee in August and is planning to marry in Spring 2009.
“I have had those other business ventures which have kept me going, kept me in good spirits and it has helped me to cope with the bad results,” she added.
“I have been very satisfied with what I have achieved; I keep saying that. I have to pinch myself sometimes to say this is my career; this is what I have achieved. But this year I feel that my motivation is coming back because I don’t like to be in the situation I have been in this year where I am not competing. I am a competitive person and there is nothing better than coming down the stretch to win. I haven’t had so many chances this year so I’m excited about next year.”
Sorenstam, who will be heading into her 16th season on the LET next year, added: “I know next year my expectations will be higher. It just takes longer than I thought. I had never dealt with an injury. I didn’t know what it was like; I didn’t know what a long process it is. I have learned that this year. I think it makes you appreciate when you feel good and when things are going your way. It’s not so easy when you are dealing with other stuff. You just have to perform and I realise that.”
This week will be Sorenstam’s last chance to end a winless year but she insisted that she was not putting undue pressure on herself.
