(Playa de Las Americas, May 3 2003) Reigning British Amateur Strokeplay champion Becky Brewerton from Wales endured a nerve-wracking Saturday in the third round of the €200,000 Tenerife Ladies Open, but rallied hard to extend her overnight lead to three shots as she heads into Sunday’s final round at Golf Las Americas.

“I’m still shaking now,” giggled Brewerton, who is aiming to become the first amateur in 19 years to win on the Ladies European Tour since Gillian Stewart won the 1984 IBM European Open at The Belfry.
“I was OK last night and fine this morning, but when I got on the first tee, I was shaking like a leaf – it just hit me there and then.”
But there were no visible signs of nerves as Brewerton birdied the opening three holes to set the pace and at one stage, she was five shots clear of the field.
Turning in 32, Brewerton, who was controversially omitted from last years GB&I Curtis Cup team, stuttered around the turn with bogies at the 12th and 15th. But closing birdies at the 16th and at the 18th after a classy sand save, the Welsh wonder became the pride of the Valleys and her many fans on the course.
“I couldn’t believe how many people came out today who were from my local area, it was awesome,” she added.
“I’m finding it a little hard to believe I am out here with so many great players, including Solheim Cup players and girls who have set the Tour alight over the last couple of years. I was so glad I got the invitation, but I don’t realise what it’s all about yet, I’m still thinking…‘Wow!’
“I’ve been relaxed while I’ve been here and everyone has been so friendly to me – There have been no team selectors whispering on the side of the greens and I think I like it more when you have to play just for yourself.”
