(MILAN, ITALY – Friday 16th October 2009) — England’s Laura Davies shot a second round of seven-under-par 65 to tie at the top of the leader board with Norwegian Marianne Skarpnord at the Carta Si Ladies Italian Open.
The duo finished on nine under par 135 with a round to go at Golf Club Le Rovedine in Milan.
Italian Diana Luna and Austrian Nicole Gergely were a shot further back, with Wales’ Becky Brewerton two shots off the pace in outright fifth.
Davies was delighted with the way she had approached the tight, tree lined course.
She said: “I’m pleased, especially on this course. It’s pretty tight and you’ve got to keep your ball in play so it’s good for the confidence, to know that I can play a tight course like this really well.
“You just make sure you hit lots of fairways and I hit 11 of 14 fairways today and 16 of 18 greens. That’s what you need to do.
“It started off well. I nearly had a hole in one at the second. I tapped in from three inches there so that was a pretty good start. Then on the third I had a birdie. On the fifth I had a birdie and the only bogey of the day came on the sixth where I hit a tee shot into the trees on the left and had to chip out. The bad nine was nice. It was solid. I had an eagle at the last, a birdie on 16 and a birdie on 10 as well. There were lots of birdies and not many mistakes.”
First round co-leaders Caroline Afonso from France and Iben Tinning of Denmark finished in equal seventh and 10th place respectively, after rounds of 73 and 75.
