DUBLIN, IRELAND (25th June 2009) — Laura Davies was made an Honorary Member of The Links Golf Society at the AIB Ladies Irish Open supported by Fáilte Ireland.
The English star was awarded the first female honorary membership, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement in women’s golf.
Cecil Whelan, Honorary Secretary of The Links Golf Society, said: “We are delighted to present Laura with Honorary Membership in recognition of her incredible achievements over her 24-year career in women’s golf.”
Roddy Carr, Tournament Promoter for the AIB Ladies Irish Open, said: “Laura Davies was the first famous woman golf professional to come to Ireland to play an exhibition for free back in the eighties to promote women’s golf. She helped pioneer the development of women’s golf in Europe and has been a great ambassador for golf around the world. She fully deserves this award.”
The Links Golf Society was founded in 1966 by Cecil Whelan after a competition with 29 golfers at the famous Baltray Links Golf Course in County Louth, Ireland.
The Primary objective of The Links Golf society is fund raising for various charities through golf. In the past 11 years the society has raised over €10 million for various charities, primarily youth charities. The links also runs a Winter League for Professional and good amateur golfers. This gives aspiring young golfers the opportunity to play with their peers and also help to improve their game.
