Frances Bondad opened with a four under par 68 at Yalong Bay Golf Club to claim the clubhouse lead at the Sanya Ladies Open in China.
The 23-year-old Australian from New South Wales had five birdies and just one dropped shot in her first round on Friday, played on a generally warm and pleasant morning in Hainan.
A stroke behind Bondad on three under were South African Lee-Anne Pace, who is defending the title, her compatriot Ashleigh Simon and China’s Zhang Yu Yang, a 20-year-old first year professional on the China LPGA tour.
Finland’s Jenni Kuosa was four under par through six holes this afternoon and tied for the lead, having fired four birdies in a row from the 12th.
Meanwhile Thailand’s Ornthana Chuenarrom was three under par after six holes.
Laura Davies and last year’s runner-up Stefanie Michl both posted two under par rounds of 70.
