With the rookies showing good form here in 2001, this year is likely to prove similar as several of the newcomers to this year’s LET have already shown huge potential.
Sweden’s Linda Wessberg has finished second already in Portugal and Anja Monke from Germany has posted three top tens. But Becky Brewerton from Wales is arguably the most likely to follow in Icher’s footsteps here as she is a stalwart of links golf having grown up on a regular diet at her home course in Abergele.
Brewerton has finished runner up twice already this season as a professional and she will always be remembered for her two second place finishes as an amateur, including an excellent performance at Royal Porthcawl GC in the 2003 Wales WPGA Championship.
Seaside golf is something she finds natural, but even in the high winds of the Pro-Am, The 21-year-old, who is second behind Wessberg in the ‘Bill Johnson Rookie of the Year’ standings, was reticent to venture out on a wind blown links.
“I’m used to this,” Brewerton quipped. “I still don’t like it…but I am used to it!”
And even Dale Reid, the former Solheim Cup captain and a regular on the venerable links of East Fife in Scotland who finished tied third here in 2001, had to concede it might get a bit too tricky if the wind remains for the weekend.
“It’s so windy today, even the seagulls are walking,” remarked Reid.
In 70mph gusts, you can’t blame them!
