(Grenoble, France November 2002) Isabella Maconi from Italy fired a flawless six under par 67 to lead after the third round of the Ladies European Tour qualifying school at Golf Grenoble Charmeil.
Prieto – blistering back nine |
Former European Amateur Champion Martina Eberl from Germany and Helena Svensson from Sweden both had 71s to share eighth place on seven under par and Jehanne Jail, another Frenchwoman, had a 69 to sit in tenth place alone on four under par.
And highlighting the increasing standard of golf coming on to the Ladies European Tour, the top 30 players – those who would effectively gain full exemption cards should they finish four rounds as things stand – are at level par and better around what is regarded by most players in this field as a tight and tricky golf course.
Maconi, who suffered the ignominy of a penalty stroke for slow play during her first round, showed character with her second round 69 and clicked into top gear with an almost effortless display in round three.
Birdies at the third and ninth saw her turn in 35 and on the back nine, her big hitting prowess showed at the par fives. A simple two putt birdie on the 11th was followed by a “lucky” 20 foot birdie putt on the par three 14th to move her to nine under par.
Uwland – “I’m stoked!” |
“I’m stoked,” said Uwland, in a broad Australian accent.
“At the start of the week I didn’t think I’d be shooting this kind of score and tomorrow, I’m going for my own personal record. I’ve been playing some good golf over the last three rounds and every time I’ve had a bogey, I didn’t get too worried about it.”
Fifty nine players made the third round cut which fell at five over par, with several players having to wait all afternoon to see if they would have a “job” next season, among them Sweden’s Linda Ericsson.
With 51 players at four over par and better after the morning matches were completed, Ericsson and her colleagues had to wait for two players on level par to post scores of 78 or worse to move the cut up to five over.
