(Tytherington, 27th January 2004) 14-year-old American sensation Michelle Wie has accepted an invite to play in this years Evian Masters tournament from 21-24 July.
The youngster, who missed the cut by a solitary shot in the Sony Hawaiian Open on the PGA Tour near her home, confirmed her attendance after being invited this week by organisers of the event, Prodeo.
Wie, who has been playing golf since the age of 4 and is already considered as the female equivalent of Tiger Woods, will join the very best of women’s world golf in the tournament including defending champion Juli Inkster and world number one Annika Sorenstam among many others.
The big hitting six footer from Honolulu, known as the “Big Weisy” after modelling her swing on Ernie Els, has an exceptional record in her many appearances on the LPGA Tour including a ninth place finish at last years Nabisco Championship, the years first major.
Despite her youth, Wie will not become the youngest player to have ever played on the Ladies European Tour, that honour being held by England’s Henrietta Brockway and Florentyna Parker, two of the Faldo Junior Series protégés, both of whom played in two events last season aged 13, the Wales WPGA Championship of Europe and the Lancia Ladies Open of Portugal.
