Rhian was competing in her first event since turning professional after LET Qualifying School at La Manga Club in December. She said: “I was steady. I came here hoping to make the cut and I did so today was just a bonus. It’s a good start to the season in my first tournament so I’m quite happy.
“Definitely the pros I played with, their short game and putting was better than mine so I’ll go back and work on that. Hopefully at the next tournament I’ll be better again.
“I’m not sure what my next tournament is as I have a conditional card but I’ve got the Access Series in a couple of weeks so that will be a goof tournament to play in. Hopefully I’ll get in a few LET events and play all of the Access Series so it should be a good year.”
Germany’s Caroline Masson, who won the Final Stage of LET Qualifying school, tied for 33rd at two over for the tournament. Meanwhile Scotland’s Carly Booth tied for 40th with fellow rookie Kym Larratt from England and five others at four-over-par.
“I didn’t play very well on the last day,” Booth said. “I missed a lot of fairways, had to chip out a couple of times and didn’t hole any putts so overall it wasn’t a very good day. My goal was just to make the cut, which I did, so it was a shame I couldn’t finish a little bit better. The next few days I’m at school and then I’m off for Easter so at least I’ve got a couple of days to practise before the next one.”
Kim Welch of the USA tied for 47th, while Mariana Macias Capuzzi from Spain tied for 59th place at eight over par.
Sweden’s Pernilla Lindberg leads the race for Ryder Cup Wales Rookie of the Year honours after her strong second place performance at the Pegasus New Zealand Women’s Open in February, followed by a tie for 35th at the ANZ Ladies Masters in early March.
