Sanchez at The Solheim Cup

Being the final event of the season, those players currently outside the top 90 spots on the order of merit will need a big week to avoid the dreaded trip to Qualifying school in Portugal next month.

The €24,750 first prize will be a welcome addition to any player this week, but this week, order of merit points will mean more than prizes for some players.

The Biarritz Ladies Classic is one of two titles still up for grabs before the year closes out as the rest have already been decided. Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson was crowned as the 2003 European number one after accumulating 917.95 points in the order of merit.

The Swede claimed the title after the Wales WPGA Championship of Europe and fended off such luminaries as Laura Davies and Annika Sorenstam with her swashbuckling victories at the Ladies Irish Open, BT Open in Northern Ireland and the HP Open in her homeland.

And Australia’s Rebecca Stevenson won the Bill Johnson Rookie of the Year by finishing 14th on the order of merit and the final title of the year to be decided is the Player’s Player of the Year, which will be announced at the end of this week.
