England’s Laura Davies, playing the course for the first time this week, opened with a round of 71 and said: “It is my kind of golf course, but it was so cold and wet today that it was so difficult to get into a rhythm. I think one under is an okay round of golf.”
Comparing Golpark Gut Häusern to National Golf Club, where she played last week, she added: “Its chalk and cheese. Last week the handcuffs were on and this week the handcuffs are off and you can hit drivers, not as hard as I’d want to hit them, because of the conditions being as they are. You can’t really swing freely and go for it because you’re scared that the cold will get to you a little bit. The last four holes with the rain were really tough for everybody.”
Leading the German charge of players were LET rookie Caroline Masson, from Gladbeck, and Anja Monke of Herford, the recent Lalla Meryem Cup champion, who both shot 72. The tournament hostess Martina Eberl carded 74. The four-round tournament continues tomorrow.
