World class women’s golf returns to Wales in August with one of the biggest tournaments on the Ladies European Tour, the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe heading to North West Wales for the first time. After eight great years in South and West Wales, this £350,000 event will attract the leading female golfers to the world renowned Royal St David’s Golf Club in Harlech.

The final line up for the event, which will take place on one of Europe’s leading links courses over four rounds, from 6-9th August, will see Sweden’s Lotta Wahlin attempt to retain the title she won after a sudden death playoff last year against Germany’s Martina Eberl at Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club.

Local favourite Becky Brewerton of St. Asaph has already confirmed her place in the field and aims to win her home event for the first time as well as hopefully, making a second appearance in Europe’s Solheim Cup team in Chicago two weeks later.

“I’ve been working hard with my coach Stewart Craig and have made a few changes to my game,” said Brewerton. “I’m hitting the ball better than ever and it feels good.

“I can’t imagine winning in Wales, it would be incredible. It would be up there with anything I could do from winning a Solheim Cup to winning a British Open. To be in contention after the cut and then to go on to win would be unbelievable.”

Brewerton, was the leading Welsh player last year, finished in a share of 11th place on three-under-par but she knows she faces stiff competition even from her own backyard with another local North Wales player, Breanne Loucks of Wrexham, looking to make her mark back in Wales after turning professional at the start of the year and playing in her first Ladies European Tour tournament in May.

Amongst some of the international names expected in the field will be Katherine Hull, one of Australia’s fasting rising golf stars, currently 13th on the Women’s World rankings. Hull claimed her breakthrough win at the Women’s Open last August and more recently took the title at the Ladies Masters earlier this year in Australia, becoming the third Australian to win the tournament in its 20-year history.

Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales said “With World number 14 Hull expected to play this is already shaping up to be the strongest field we have ever seen for the event. In terms of women’s sport, it is one of the biggest events Wales hosts and the players will find Royal St David’s in great shape and a fantastic challenge. Visitors from around the world have re-discovered the course since it hosted the Welsh Seniors event and they have not been disappointed, we are looking forward to a great week.”
