(Surfers Paradise, Australia, February 26 2004) Australia’s Rachel Teske fired a five under par 67 to lead after the first round of the $Aus800,000 ANZ Ladies Masters at the Royal Pines resort GC on Australia’s Gold Coast.

Laura Davies – making a stout defence

Joining the Swede on three under is Italian Stefania Croce, Australians Vicky Uwland and Michelle Ellis, Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann and defending champion Laura Davies who ended the day frustrated with her putter after leaving many chances short of the hole.

“To be honest, it was disappointing really as I played really well,” said Davies who finished third last week at the ABC Learning Centres Classic just down the road.

“I hit two tee shots that weren’t great and I made a lot of very good putts that didn’t drop. The greens were a little slower after the weather we’ve had and getting the ball to the hole was quite a feat.

“It is playing a little longer than normal and I’ve been hitting sand wedges from everywhere but I’m disappointed not to hole a few more putts.”

US Open Champion Hilary Lunke is in the group a shot further back on two under par alongside Karine Icher from France and Scotland’s Mhairi McKay.

Four time winner of the ANZ Masters Karrie Webb sits on one under par after a frustrating day with her putter.
