Nicole Garcia and Melanie Mätzler made it an ace week at the Jabra Ladies Open when they scored holes-in-one at Evian Resort Golf Club.
There hadn’t been a hole-in-one on the Ladies European Tour in 2018 but South African Garcia used an 8-iron from 151 yards to ace the 16th hole in her opening round on Thursday, en route to a 73, before moving into contention for her first LET title with a 67 in the second round on Friday.
“We did see the ball disappear, but the pin was right in front of the bunker, so we didn’t know if it had popped in the bunker or the hole. We started celebrating but then decided not to celebrate, just in case. The LET tournament director Davide Lantos came to the green and gave us the thumbs up, so then we could celebrate!” said Garcia, who is also looking to qualify for her first appearance in The Evian Championship.
Switzerland’s Mätzler kept the party rolling with a hole-in-one at the 14th in her second round, after hitting a perfect shot with a hybrid club from 171 metres.
“It was on the line from the start and pitched a metre in front of the pin and rolled straight in,” said Mätzler. “I’ve had five holes in one now, but still no car or watch! However, two in tournaments is good. The other was on the Florida Suncoast series and three were in practice rounds, including one three weeks ago at Gams when I was playing with my father.”
Prior to the Jabra Ladies Open, there hadn’t been a hole-in-one on the LET in 2018, although order of merit leader Jenny Haglund did make an ace during the ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open.
