In the build up to the Ricoh Women’s British Open, the Ladies European Tour and Golf Foundation have been working together to create a project that aims to inspire children and young people in the area around Royal Lytham and St Annes Golf Club.

The project brings together three of the Golf Foundation’s HSBC Golf Roots Centres and has been used as an opportunity to establish two new Centres, thereby highlighting the event’s legacy effect. In addition, discussions about playing and competition opportunities have taken place with the MiniLinks Par 3 facility that is located close to Royal Lytham. The main element of the project is the coaching sessions that will take place before and after the Ricoh Women’s British Open, however, the youngsters involved will also be treated to a unique visit to the main event where they will not only be able to enjoy the activities in the Golf Zone, but will also be given a tour of the site and will get the chance to meet some of the players.

The Golf Foundation has provided funding for the initial taster sessions and each venue will continue to encourage the young beginner through holiday camps. It is hoped that many of the children will continue with the sport having been inspired by some of the top female golfers in the world and their local PGA coaches.

Mike Round, Development Director for the Ladies European Tour said: “Major women’s golf events provide us with an ideal opportunity to inspire children and young people, particularly girls. Following the launch of the R&A’s Women in Golf Charter, we have worked with the Golf Foundation to make sure the impact of the Ricoh Women’s British Open extends way beyond the week of the tournament.”

The Regional Development Officer for the Golf Foundation, Andy Leigh commented: “The Ladies European Tour has provided a tremendous opportunity for our local junior golf development projects. To give beginners the chance to witness a world class sporting event and see the best players in the world is very inspiring. There is certainly a buzz in the local clubs about the Ricoh Women’s British Open and we certainly hope to inspire a generation from this.”

The Ricoh Women’s British Open will take place from Thursday 2nd August to Sunday 6th August.
