Germany’s Sophia Popov made a scintillating start to the third round of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Ladies Scottish Open this morning when she made an eagle on the second and a hole-in-one on the eighth hole at Gullane, before a strong, gusty breeze picked up on the links.

Popov, who had started the day in joint 52nd position, moved up into a share of 36th after a one-under-par round of 70, to sit on a one-under-par total after 54-holes.

Aberdeen Standard Investments has pledged a £5 donation for each yardage in a hole-in-one, meaning that Popov’s holed pitching wedge from 151 yards was worth £755 to the tournament’s official charity, Maggie’s.
